Working in Canada provides valuable career experience and can be a pathway to permanent residency.
There are various options available for foreign workers:
- LMIA-Based Work Permits (Temporary Foreign Worker Program)
Under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, employers looking to hire a temporary foreign worker must conduct a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to prove that employing the foreign worker will not negatively impact the Canadian labour market. Once a positive LMIA is obtained, the foreign worker can apply for a work permit.
- LMIA-exempt work permits (International Mobility Program)
The International Mobility Program (IMP) covers work permits that do not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Under the IMP, various permits are available, including Post-Graduation Work Permits, Intra-Company Transferee (ICT) permits, and open work permits for spouses or common-law partners.
The
International Experience Canada (IEC) program, which includes the Working Holiday program, also falls under the IMP. This program is designed for young individuals from partner countries who wish to travel and work in Canada for up to 2 years.
